A New Kind of Camera Store
A New Kind of Camera Store
Camera stores are closing at a faster rate than ever; however, sometimes when one camera store closes another one opens.
Few people were happy to hear that Kenmar Camera (near Mineola, Long Island) closed earlier this year. Kenmar was a pro-level store in the suburbs of NYC, and it was a treasure for photography lovers.
But Kenmar’s demise has resulted in the opening of A Photographer’s Place, about a mile south of Kenmar on Willis Avenue. It’s a new kind of camera store, at least for the NYC area. it is part gallery, educational center, service bureau/digital lab and more. And, yes, cameras are also for sale, but there’ s no sales counter.
Call it a photography boutique.
Michael Horowitz, one of the Kenmar partners and a guy who lives and breathes photography, is having a great time running A Photographer’s Place, which has a sleek black living room set instead of a sales counter. (See Michael Horowitz’s work here and here.)
The small storefront and basement are packed with his large-format 60-inch-plus inkjet printers, the walls are lined with his striking work and there are four Macs set up for classroom instruction.
A large safe, to hold the camera inventory, is on its way.
Horowitz is an expert B&W and color printer, having just completed 40 prints for a major exhibit at Cleveland’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Kenmar was an institution on Long Island for decades, first in Great Neck and then near Mineola, so Horowitz has a loyal following of customers. The phone was ringing off the hook when bwphotopro.com dropped by.
Horowitz’s work now adorns the walls, but shows will also feature other photographers.
There’s no Web site yet. So you’ll just have to go to A Photographer’s Place, in person. We recommend doing so.
