Herman Miller

HERMAN MILLER is a serious, enthusiastic B&W photographer from Knoxville, TN. He has a real sense for the monochrome look and a great feel for B&W dramatics. He shared his work and thoughts about the B&W photography:

Herman Miller:

Most of what I do is in B&W.

I love the look of B&W film, such a timeless and gorgeous quality, always inspiring. And when I shoot digital I am always thinking how it will look with B&W conversion. What I have always found interesting about B&W is contrast; there are just so many tones and looks you can end up with.

Sometimes you find inspiration in the most simple places and themes. And I always get the most enjoyment when this happens. Most of my favorite work is simple everyday places and themes.

I do very little post work, and all my film work is just how I shot it. I’ve always been an admirer of shooters who do this.

Many of the photographers I love are from the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, a classic time for photography. So much great work was produced during this era. I’ve always been a fan of Stieglitz, Weston, Strand, Bresson. Andre Kertesz always amazes me. So many more: Newton, Avedon, Araki...

I shoot film and digital, everything from 35mm to point and shoot. Most of what I do has been shot with a Canon 35 mm and digital Rebel, and for medium format I have a Mamiya 645. Mostly natural light, some strobe and flash every now and then.
